War Risk Insurance
Specialist protection for an increasingly complex world.
War, terrorism and geopolitical instability can create exposures that
standard marine insurance is not designed to cover.
War Risk Insurance provides specialist protection when vessels
operate in or travel through higher risk environments.
Why is War Risk Insurance separate?
Standard marine policies do not necessarily cover losses arising from war and related geopolitical events.
Many of these risks are specifically excluded from standard Hull & Machinery and P&I policies and therefore require dedicated insurance arrangements.
War Risk Insurance can be structured alongside the vessel’s main marine insurance programme to address these exceptional exposures.

War risk is dynamic
Unlike many traditional marine risks, geopolitical exposure can change quickly.
A navigation area considered acceptable today may become subject to additional underwriting requirements or premiums following a change in the security environment.
For certain voyages, insurers may require advance notification before the vessel enters a higher risk area.
Additional premiums may then apply depending on the location, vessel, duration of exposure and geopolitical situation at the time of the voyage.
When can War Risk Insurance become relevant?
Higher risk navigation
A vessel needs to transit through a region subject to increased geopolitical tension.
Charter itinerary
A commercial yacht receives a charter request involving a higher risk navigation area.
Changing security conditions
The security environment changes while a vessel is preparing an international voyage.

In these situations, specialist market access and responsive broking become particularly important.
A voyage may require specific approval
War Risk Insurance is not always arranged on exactly the same basis as conventional marine insurance.
Depending on the navigation area, insurers may apply specific conditions, require notification or charge an additional premium for a particular voyage.
This is why it is important to talk to your Be Protected Yachting specialist early, before entering a potentially higher risk area.
What do insurers look at?
War risk terms depend on the vessel, the planned voyage and the security environment at the time of the exposure.
